What is Tratak Sadhana? Part 2: The Benefits

Tratak is an advanced technique. Seek the help of a Guru before starting its practise.

This post continues from the prior article on Tratak – click here to read.

The benefits are many

The point of tratak is to ultimately still the mind and use the resulting concentration to access soul power within.

Aside from improved focus, mental acuity and memory, other notable benefits are:

  • Precognition. One may experience such heightened levels of perception that your observation skills border on precognition. IE – you can almost read someone’s thoughts or know what they are about to say before they say it. This occurs because the mind is usually attempting to process more information from your 5 senses continuously than is usually possible. Most of the time it must ‘delete’ the majority of this information flowing in and just focus on the relevant details. With the practice of tratak, one starts to delete less and absorb more.
  • Influence. Your powers of influence improve as you can no only ‘read’ people better, your added awareness and mental acuity give rise to greater levels of confidence. In combination these two factors allow you to improve your oration abilities, stick to the strength of your convictions and therefore much more easily influence others.
  • Siddhis. The advanced practitioner of tratak can reach the stage where their cognitive abilities can access the subtle realms of existence and channel divine power to manifest siddhis (when used in conjunction with mantras); the easiest being clairvoyance, remote vision, psychic communication, etc.
Tratak is generally considered an advanced technique and the help of a Guru should be sought by the serious practitioner.

Siddhis: The Achievement of Mystic Perfection: Part 1

Siddhis are surprisingly easy to manifest

Aspire to the supernatural

Siddhis are the manifestation of supernatural abilities in the aspirant. They are naturally made available to spiritual masters through the course of their pursuit of perfection, but the determined sadhak (aspirant) may gain the same or similar powers through japa and tapas (chanting and penance).

Common misconceptions

Siddhi does not occur overnight. Does the aspiring athelete break world records overnight? Is every cricketer ever to step onto the pitch automatically as skilled as Tendulkar? No.

Distinguished athletes’ abilities come from a combination of natural talent and countless hours of practice. In a similar manner, the spiritual aspirant is either advantaged through birth (had attained or came very close to attaining siddhis in a prior lifetime) or has worked very hard to receive them.

However, one does not need to be a Himilayan Rishi to manifest some of the minor powers; they are surprisingly easy to attain.

Classifications of Siddhis

There are three broad classifications of siddhis: the 8 primary siddhis, 10 minor siddhis; and a number of ‘micro’ siddhis. This series will look at each of these sets in turn.

The Ashtasiddhis

The legendary ashtasiddhis are known to virtually everyone: both adults through scripture and children through hearing puranic tales.

Here is a list

  • 1 Anima – Decrease one’s body size to atomic level or manipulate density to pass through solid matter. Demonstrated by: Hanuman.
  • 2 Maghima – The opposite of Anima – increase one’s body size. Demonstrated by: Sri Krishna, Hanuman, various demons.
  • 3 Laghima – Become lighter than air and fly. Demonstrated by Hanuman.
  • 4 Gharima – The power to become heavier than any mortal. Demonstrated by: Angatha in the court of Ravana.
  • 5 Prapti – Bring objects to your hand through space. Demonstrated by: warriors who have received divine weapons. One can invoke them by calling them to hand.
  • 6 Agamiyam – The ability to leave your body and enter that of another. This power costs two lifetimes’ worth of punya (positive karma) to use. Demonstrated by: Adi Shankaracharya.
  • 7 Esathwam – All earthly beings bow before you and do your bidding. This siddhi is granted by Shiva himself. Only those who reach the rank of Maharishis, Celestial beings and Siddhas can use this power.
  • 8 Vasithwam – Total control of all things everywhere. This is the sole privilege and attribute of God.

Understand that such powers are virtually impossible to attain

Please do not be under the delusion that any of the ashtasiddhis are available to ordinary mortals. They are powers of the highest calibre with such universe changing attributes that they are unobtainable by those below the level of Siddha.

To fully convey this point, understand that (1) only the greatest of great characters throughout history such as Hanuman, Adi Shankarcharya and Sri Krishna were said to have such powers; and (2) looking through scripture you will clearly see, such powers were only ever demonstrated at the direct command of God.

Leverage the Mind-Body Connection: Hit the Gym!

The Mind and Body are intimately connected. Exercise both for quick spiritual progress!

The mind and body are related

Scientists have begun to explore the concept of the mind-body connection. This means that one’s actions and the positioning of one’s physical body has a direct influence on your mental state. Very simply, if you act depressed, you will feel  depressed. If you act enthusiastic and full of energy, you will feel that way.

The idea is known as physiology.

How can we leverage this with mantras?

I have already written on pranayama – click here to read the prior article. This is to control the breath in order to rein-in the mind.

Let us take this idea one step further: given the linkage between mind and body, any mental sadhana can also be accompanied by a physical one.

This is powerful idea. Increasing levels of mental discipline will also self-perpetuate physical discipline and vice versa. Think about it!

A new 40 day challenge

I am hopeful that many of you at least attempted to maintain some idea of longer-term sadhana post Navaratri. It is an important discipline to maintain.

Those of you who benefited will undoubtedly want more! Now I propose that those readers interested in gaining a big boost to their physical vitality combine a mantra sadhana with a physical one: hit the gym or run, or do some exercise in direct proportion to the time you spend meditating.

As your physical strength and endurance grows, so will your concentration and determination to do more toward your spiritual path. The reverse is also true.

Even the ancient Rishis knew this! Many of them are well known for their epic travels across India and abroad – they knew the value of movement and physical exercise. Those that did not undoubtedly practised physical forms of yoga. A healthy body is directly conducive to a healthy mind!

Is there really a downside to this??

The downside is of course that you sacrifice your time in order to do so. It will require you to sacrifice sleep to wake up that 15-30mins earlier in order to work out or exercise before bathing and beginning your sadhana. But is this really a sacrifice given the benefits?

In the modern era, everyone knows that consistent exercise can stave off a great many illnesses and ailments. Over time, it is undoubted that your lifespan will increase due to the dedicated effort to exercise in earlier periods.

Do not miss this opportunity; start now and try it for 40 days!

Is the spirit willing but the flesh weak? Mantras can help!

For those interested but lacking motivation, I would recommend reading my prior post on using the four Agni devatas to generate the passion and enthusiasm you are looking for!  Click here.

Thoughts on Mantra: Choose Breathing over Eye Strain

Breath control is one of the key pillars to manifesting Siddhis

Focusing between the eyes is difficult

A common practice in mantra japa is to focus one’s inner vision on the space between the eyes on the forehead.

If accompanied by a physical focus, this may result in eyestrain for many aspirants.

There is an alternative

An alternative method of focusing one’s mind is to control your breathing. This process is known as the concept of pranayama.

There are 5 pranas in the body (vital forces). It is not necessary to go into too much detail on their function but in essence they are the energy flows throughout the body which regulate bodily functions. When controlled, they allow one to tap into your inner power and open the gates of the mind during meditation.

In fact, it is this heightened level of concentration which leads to powerful siddhis manifesting in the aspirant.

Many methods, one goal

A simple method of controlling one’s breathing is simply to watch and regulate it consciously.

1. Relax and take deep breaths to calm the mind initially.

2. Start Japa and establish a rhythm.

3. Then attempt to say one or two mantras mentally while inhaling and 1-2x more mantras exhaling. Your exhale is longer than the inhale and so you will naturally end up reciting more mantras.

4. Repeat until the mind stills and then delve deeper into more focused meditation.

This is just one way. You can vary this as you wish according to your own needs but the point is the same – control your breath to control the mind.

I would strongly suggest you learn more advanced techniques through a qualified yoga instructor or with the supervision of a practising Guru.

Kandha Sashti 2011: The 6 Boons of Lord Skanda

Let the Vel protect and guide you! Start your Sashti Sadhana today!

Day 3 of Kandha Sashti

In the prior posts, mantras and potential sadhanas were presented to the reader.

But what are the benefits and attributes of praying to Lord Skanda over the Kandha Sashti period?

There are 6 main boons provided by Skanda:

1. Wisdom and Intelligence. The young Skanda is said to have initiated his own father Shiva into the secrets of the Pranava mantra – Om! You can be blessed with such spiritual wisdom and intelligence when praying to Him.

2. Powers of Attraction. Along with Sri Krishna, Skanda is known as an extremely attractive and charismatic God to His devotees. Praying to him as the all attracting one will allow one to gain the blessings of a magnetic personality.

3. Courage and strength. Skanda is known as the God of War – a fierce warrior ready to do battles against the demons within and without. Pray to Him for courage in your day to day life and help in making big bold decisions.

4. Peace. Peace is a scarce commodity in these days and times. Allow yourself to become a channel of Skanda’s peace.

5. Self-control. One cannot lead without setting an example to your co-workers and subordinates. Master yourself and gain discipline by praying to Skanda for help.

6. Moksha. Skanda is known as a deity with the full authority of Heaven to deliver aspirants to Moksha (release from birth and death). The true spiritual aspirant will have this as the ultimate goal and sole purpose of their prayers.

Kandha Sashti 2011: Set Up Your Sadhana!

Let the Vel protect and guide you! Start your Sashti Sadhana today!

Day 1 of Kandha Sashti

There are many ways to benefit from Skanda’s grace during Kandha Sashti, including fasting and japa.

Japa is the focus of this blog. In starting a coherent plan of action for Kandha Sashti, two paths are suggested (which are in reality not mutually exclusive).

1. Recite the Kandha Sashti Kavach 36x per day for 6 days. A lighter version of this sadhana is to recite it 6 times per day, totalling 36x by Sashti.

2. Chant malas of Om Saravanabhavaya Namaha. Attempt at Laghu Anusthan – ie 27,000 counts. This is equivalent to 4,500 times per day or about 42 malas.

There are many meditations on Skanda

One take time over Kandha Sashti to meditate on the various attributes of Skanda – the contrasting themes of his extreme benevolence to devotees and playful nature relative to his reputation as the God of War and master strategist.

Here are the benefits from the final set of verses:

    1. Ability to bear physical pain: Verse 25 (Naasai roga harai…)
    2. Victory over enemies: Verse 30 (Saadhu Santa ke…)

    6. The Grace of Hanuman: Verse 37  (Jai Jai Jai Hanumaana…)

The method of sadhana for the Hanuman Chalisa

Aspirants often ask how many times to chant the Chalisa.

It is noted that 1, 3, 9, 11 and 108 times are the most auspicious numbers, although there is no real limitation or wrong way of chanting it! More importantly, dedication, regularity and devotion are key. The most auspicious times and days are during the twilight hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays, although again, this is a stotra one can learn and recite daily.

For those who want to attempt the higher number of repetitions but feel they are unable to get the pronunciation correct, I have updated the Listen to Mantras page on the blog (click here to access it) with a fast version (recited within 3mins).  It is therefore possible to finish a full 108 within a few hours.

Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama!

Secrets of the Hanuman Chalisa (Part 1)

The Hanuman Chalisa is a powerful technology to provide all-round benefits

A powerful technology for all-round benefits

The Hanuman Chalisa has benefited millions across generations through its mantra-shakti and ability to incite the deepest devotion in the most intensely troubled sadhak.

But do not think it to be limited to merely improving your state of mind! It is indeed an intensely powerful stotra (hymn) which can endow the saadhak (spiritual aspirant) with real power – physical, metaphysical and spiritual; and both for daily life and also for esoteric purposes.

A quick recap of the basics….

We have already covered the basic benefits of the Chalisa – building character and Ram Bhakti. You can read the prior articles on Hanuman by clicking here and here; they provide a quick refresher on his attributes and the general benefits of Hanuman worship.

…then onto the master class!

The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of 40 verses adoring Hanuman and his great achievements in the context of the epic Ramayana. Each verse is also known as a chaupai (4 legged) and consists of a rhyming couplet.

It is the essence of the Sundara Kand of the Ramayana. In fact this is one of the very reasons for its unbelievable power to help any devotee – the Sundara Kand is prescribed to anyone with a strong will to make something happen which is beyond their control – one prominent example is hastening marriage.

There are of course a much broader set of benefits to reading or listening to the Chalisa daily – here is a full list:

  1. Removes bad karma of unknowingly insulting or harming a Guru or fellow devotee
  2. Wisdom and strength
  3. Divine knowledge
  4. Remove bad habits and company
  5. Cultivates bhakti
  6. Protection from snakes and bites
  7. Fame
  8. Restores and improves career/social status
  9. Protection from malefic effect of planets
  10. Accomplish difficult tasks, break obstacles
  11. Rescue from crisis
  12. Fulfilment of desires
  13. Protection from Black Magic and spirits
  14. Health
  15. Ability to bear physical pain
  16. Victory over enemies
  17. Siddhis (occult powers)
  18. Wealth
  19. Mental peace
  20. Ethical judgement
  21. The Grace of Hanuman

This series will highlight which specific verses provide each of the benefits. within the Chalisa can be recited on their own as ‘mini-mantras’ to gain specific benefits.
